Laser Skin Treatment Market Slowing Down

Cutera Drops After Removing Forecast

Tuesday November 6, 1:32 pm ET

Cutera Shares Sink After Company Withdraws Forecast on Weak Sales of Pearl Skin Laser Systems

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Cutera Inc. fell to an annual low Tuesday after the company suspended its full-year profit forecast, saying sales of its Pearl laser have been disappointing and growth in the laser skin treatment market may be slowing down.

The Pearl laser, which is designed to reduce wrinkles and generate new collagen growth, reached the market during the quarter. Cutera said its current customers are buying Pearl systems, but new customers have been slow to adopt the system.

The company said it can no longer predict results from future quarters because market growth is slowing down. In August, Cutera forecast a full-year profit of 88 cents per share, or $1.15 per share excluding charges, on $111 million in revenue.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expect a profit of $1.13 for the year, on $109.1 million in sales.

Shares sank $2.68, or 13 percent, to $17.78 in midday trading and reached a low of $17.25.

Merriman Curhan Ford analyst Jose Haresco said the retraction of Cutera's outlook was "a nod ... to the dour sentiment in the laser-aesthetic sector."

Cutera reported third-quarter results in line with estimates after the bell Monday, although Needham & Co. analyst Dalton Chandler said results met his estimates in unexpected ways, with a low tax rate helping to offset weaker-than-expected margins.

That could signal unpredictable results in future quarters, he said.

In the quarter ended Sept. 30, Cutera's profit grew 4.8 percent to $3.09 million, or 22 cents per share, from $2.95 million, or 21 cents per share, on fewer shares outstanding. Excluding stock-based compensation costs, the company earned 30 cents per share.

Revenue rose 12 percent to $28.1 million from $25.1 million

Analysts expected 29 cents per share on $27.7 million in revenue.

Prokofiev: VADIM REPIN Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 19 (Part 1)

I'm going to find the video of him playing while he was a young boy.... such talent.

Mozart Violin Concerto 5 (2of 5) Janine Jansen- violin

I despised mozart when I was younger and learning violin. Now it's quite the opposite. I actually can appreciate the finer details of Mozart. Perhaps it's because I'm not really playing the pieces, I'm just listening to them.

Camille Saint-Saƫns

In 1845, he was only ten years old; he could already play all of Ludwig Van Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas from memory. After his first true public performance at the "Salle Pleyel" on the 6th of May 1846, he was hailed as a second Mozart. Later that year he won a prize from the "SociƩtƩ Sainte Cecile" and his first symphony was produced the next year (1847) by the same Society.

Camille Saint-Saƫns was desperately precocious composing his first piece at the age of three a "Galop" for piano.

What's the active ingedient in Mederma?

It is Cepalin.

Cepalin® is the proprietary botanical extract used in MEDERMA®. It comes from onions, which have historically been used to soothe skin irritation and inflammation. Cepalin® works to soften hardened scar tissue and improve the color, texture and overall appearance of scars.

EpiQuin Micro

Epiquin Micro is designed to help with Hyperpigmentation.

Included in this is postinflammatory hyperpigmentation which appears as dark patches that develop from injury to the skin. Sometimes it's caused by skin disorders like acne, eczema and contact dermatitis. Other times, cosmetic procedures or reactions to cosmetics can produce postinflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Skin trauma: Trauma may be due to inflammatory skin disorders such as acne, eczema, and contact dermatitis. Sometimes cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, waxing, and electrolysis maybe the cause. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation occurs at the site of injury, which can appear anywhere on the body. Men and women have the same risk of developing postinflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Gradual release therapy.EpiQuin® Micro provides treatment throughout the day. The Microsponge® system uses microscopic reservoirs that entrap hydroquinone and retinol and gradually releases them over a period of hours. This provides the skin with continuous exposure to hydroquinone and retinol over time, which may help minimize skin irritation.

EpiQuin Micro is the only hydroquinone 4% formulated with Microsponge® technology and retinol. The retinol provides improvement in appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while enhancing the skin's appearance. Antioxidants vitamin E (tocopheryl acetate) and vitamin C (ascorbic acid) help protect against free-radical damage. EpiQuin Micro is a safe, steroid-free formulation that can be used for both acute and maintenance therapy without the potential harmful side effects of long term steroid use. EpiQuin Micro should be tested for skin sensitivity prior to use.

Ceres Cited for Tainted drinking water

From Modesto Bee Sept 28, 2007

CERES -- Public safety is No. 1 when it comes to providing healthy, drinkable water to Ceres residents.
But making sure people have sufficient water pressure is a close second, according to Michael Riddell, head of water and sanitary services for Ceres. It's a challenging balancing act.
The city was cited three times in four months this summer for allowing contaminated water to enter the city's drinking water system. The water, pumped from the ground, exceeded state and fed-eral maximum levels for arsenic, uranium, manganese and nitrate.
The city gets its water from 10 wells pumping 14 million gallons a day. When flow becomes contaminated, the wells are shut down for fixes, affecting the level of water pressure available to certain homes in Ceres.
"From the mishandling of the high nitrate episode during the last week of May, it is evident that city staff made decisions, which were not protective of the public health," wrote water engineer Joe Spano in a June citation.
Spano's report refers to a rush of excessive levels of nitrate into the water system at the end of May. Spano is a district engineer with the state department of health services, the agency that supervises public water systems to ensure state and federal drinking water standards are met. He couldn't be reached for comment this week or last.
Water from Boothe Well has too many nitrates. To bring the concentration down to drinkable levels, the well's flow is combined with the Riverbluff Well, which has a low nitrate count. The outcome is water that is below the state-mandated level for nitrate contamination -- 45 milligrams per liter.
But when the Riverbluff Well unexpectedly shut down one early Monday morning in May, the high-nitrate Boothe Well continued pumping.
Too much nitrate, manganese
The state and federal governments set maximum levels of contaminants that public water systems are allowed to carry in drinking water delivered to homes, schools and businesses. Delivering quality water is a task for many valley city governments, not just Ceres, especially because many contaminants naturally occur in the environment and water is in such high demand.
In his citation, Spano noted the concerns surrounding the nitrate contamination -- excessive levels are dangerous to infants and pregnant women because the conversion of nitrate to nitrite by the body can interfere with the blood's ability to carry oxygen.
Ceres also was cited for excessive manganese in water in mid-June and contaminated uranium July 6; a third charge came after high levels of arsenic got into the system June 18 and 20.
Exposure to the chemicals in elevated amounts for an ex- tended period of time can lead to stomach pains, nausea, and in extreme cases, cancer and neurological disorders, accord- ing to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Transgressions of water standards can carry $250 fines on the city for each day the violations continue. Ceres officials said the city never has been fined by the California Department of Health Services; that could not be confirmed by the department of health.
The citations came during summer months -- peak demand time for water, Riddell said. People are using more water, which puts a demand on the system for water pressure.
"You have to keep the flow coming, but also need the safety. You have to give the customers what they're paying for," Riddell said.
The city also was cited for failing to provide adequate paper- work, failing to send required testing results to state officials, or to properly inform customers when water was contaminated. When issues did arise with the water system, city staff failed to notify the Department of Health Services immediately.
Those infractions have been fixed by updating procedures and offering more training for the city's six water employees, Riddell said.
Water contamination is surveyed by an electronic monitoring system with employees on call if the computer sends out an alert, Riddell said. Water at all well sites is sampled and tested every week, officials said. Results are sent to the state.
Repairs could be costly
Repairing wells to decrease the incidence of contamination could be very costly, easily reaching into the millions for each well, Riddell said. The challenge is providing safe water, supplying enough water pressure and keeping costs at a minimum for residents.
"The problem is finding good water. We need two new wells now," Riddell said. "In the past 10 years, we drilled 12 test holes and only one worked."
While water officials focus on bringing Ceres' groundwater infrastructure up to par, they are working on a surface water agreement with the Turlock Irrigation District. That project would cost about $70 million by completion.
In the meantime, officials are eyeing a possible water rate increase, along with a move from fixed monthly bills (about $15) to charges based on metered usage.
"Water usage goes way down when people are paying for what they use," Riddell said.

How does arsenic get into water supplies

Most arsenic enters water supplies either from natural deposits in the earth or from industrial and agricultural pollution. Arsenic is a natural element of the earth's crust. It is used in industry and agriculture, and for other purposes. It also is a byproduct of copper smelting, mining and coal burning. U.S. industries release thousands of pounds of arsenic into the environment every year.

Info on Arsenic in drinking water from Natural Resources Defense Council

According to a 1999 study by the National Academy of Sciences, arsenic in drinking water causes bladder, lung and skin cancer, and may cause kidney and liver cancer. The study also found that arsenic harms the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as heart and blood vessels, and causes serious skin problems. It also may cause birth defects and reproductive problems.

Can I buy a filter that will remove arsenic from my water?
Yes. You should purchase filters certified by NSF International (1-800-NSF-MARK) to remove arsenic (such as water distillation systems). While such certification is not necessarily a guarantee of safety, it is better than no certification at all. It is critically important that all filters be maintained and replaced at least as often as recommended by the manufacturer; otherwise they might make the problem worse.

Electric company

The electric company (Kirkes Electric) Mark, came by to see what issues I was having with our new construction. We decided on getting some of the light switches changed back to the motion detectors - since they weren't giving me trouble.

I mentioned that some canned lights were causing bulbs to burn out - The wiring was going to be checked to make sure there wasn't any connections stuck on there backwards.

PrognoCis PrognoCis PrognoCis

PrognoCis expert sales person K.S. gave one of our staff some lessons on PrognoCis.

We've been having some trouble with PrognoCis. We feel that we haven't spent enough time getting prognoCis to work for us.

But they will seem to try - which we appreciate.

Well, the latest project involves getting the EMR software (PrognoCis) to be hooked up with email, and then also possibly remind us to call botox patients when they are needed to come back. I've heard (from our staff) that this is similar to what is called a tickler postcard system. More on this later. We hope to get PronoCis equipped with emailing and tickling capabililities.

I keep making adjustments to this web page. Breast Augmentation seems to be a rapidly evolving procedure. I've updated the web page to include a Running web page. Running used to be a great hobby of mine. But I stopped in 2003 due to a post marathon injury. Sadly, I haven't taken up running again. However, Dr. Tammy Wu still runs somewhat and has written another web page about Running and Breast Implants.

I moved to this blog location

Why did I move?

The old blog had this URL: http://surgicalartistry.blogspot.com/

I thought: Well, it sounded too formal to be a mind - dump / mind - transfer. Perhaps I need to transform that old blog to something of education value.

This blog on the other hand has education value, but it isn't structured. It's a straight mind transfer. My mind is a creative one, it doesn't work in columns or rows, and definitely isn't color coordinated, and doesn't work predictably.
